U.S. President Donald Trump has announced that American forces will assist ships stranded in the Persian Gulf in crossing the Strait of Hormuz. In a social media post, he stated that this mission, named "Project Freedom," would commence on Monday morning.
Writing on Truth Social, Trump said, "We have informed these countries that we will guide their ships safely out of this closed waterway (Strait of Hormuz) so they can continue their business and trade freely and efficiently."
The U.S. Central Command (CENTCOM) confirmed that the President's directive would be implemented. In a statement, they said the operation will involve 15,000 U.S. troops, over a hundred land- and sea-based aircraft, warships, and drones.
However, the U.S. President did not specify exactly how the more than 850 stranded ships would be escorted through the strait. Furthermore, U.S. officials indicated that their current plans do not involve U.S. Navy warships directly towing or extracting the vessels.
Meanwhile, shortly after Trump's announcement, a tanker was attacked off the coast of Fujairah in the United Arab Emirates. The United Kingdom Maritime Trade Operations (UKMTO) agency reported the incident. The identity of the attackers remains unknown, and no casualties were reported.
