FIR Filed Against Mamata Over Bangladesh Killing Remarks
Former West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee
A complaint has been filed against former West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee at a Cyber Crime Police Station over her remarks on a killing incident in Bangladesh. Lawyer Rinku Chatterjee Singh lodged the complaint, alleging that Banerjee made comments referring to the killing of Osman Hadi. A similar complaint was also filed against her on the same issue last week.
Reports say that on June 2, while speaking at a sit-in protest at Dharmatala in Kolkata, Mamata Banerjee referred to the widely discussed killing of Osman Hadi in Bangladesh. The statement has drawn allegations that she made provocative remarks involving India’s Ministry of Home Affairs. She has also been accused of disclosing sensitive administrative and security-related information in public.
BJP IT cell chief and West Bengal observer Amit Malviya said, “Such statements for political gain can unnecessarily drag bilateral relations into controversy and weaken India’s position.”
The complainant, lawyer Rinku Chatterjee Singh, claimed that Osman Hadi was killed in Bangladesh in December. She further alleged that those involved in the killing entered West Bengal through the Meghalaya border in January this year, after which two of them were arrested by the state Special Task Force (STF). Citing this incident, Mamata Banerjee reportedly referred to it during her June 2 speech. Although she did not name anyone directly, the complaint alleges that she indicated awareness of those involved in the killing in another country and also mentioned the Home Ministry.
Following the incident, an FIR has been filed against her at the Siliguri Cyber Crime Police Station. The complaint states that such remarks could pose a threat to national security, administrative confidentiality, and public harmony.
Defense expert Colonel RK Srivastava said, “Allegations that openly link a neighboring country’s political killing with India’s Home Ministry or central leadership are extremely serious. If there is credible evidence, it should be presented before the relevant investigative agencies or courts. Otherwise, such statements can create unnecessary confusion at the international and diplomatic levels.”
During the event, Mamata Banerjee had said, “A major criminal from Bangladesh was arrested by the STF. There was major protest in Bangladesh over it. I am not talking about another country, but the point I am making is that they enter Bengal through Meghalaya. After entering here, our STF arrests them. The Home Minister himself is saying… I had not spoken until now, but I am speaking because the level of harassment has crossed all limits.”
Police said that the Siliguri Cyber Crime Police Station has already begun reviewing the complaint. Further action will depend on the progress of the investigation.
