Multiple individuals are thought to have been targeted by at least one shark following a vessel inversion off California’s coastline in the U.S. Eleven passengers remain unaccounted for.

According to the U.S. Coast Guard, sixteen individuals, identified as Mexican citizens, were safely pulled from the ocean.

"A number of those rescued sustained severe wounds consistent with shark bites, and Coast Guard personnel administered crucial emergency care," the agency announced in an official release, LA times reported.

The Coast Guard noted that the incident occurred outside U.S. territorial waters in a region commonly utilized by human smugglers. Survivors reported to authorities that twenty-seven passengers were originally on board.

"Our team was capable of rendering assistance, which prompted us to deploy our rescue units," Petty Officer Charlie Valor was quoted as saying, on Saturday.

While the surrounding waters are frequently used for recreational boating and fishing, tragic attempts to traffic migrants from Mexico into the United States have previously taken place in this zone.

The Mexican consulate located in San Diego confirmed that all rescued individuals were citizens of Mexico. The Coast Guard indicated that Customs and Border Protection had initiated an investigation and was questioning the survivors, though the department did not instantly reply to inquiries for status updates.

Should the survivors be classified as witnesses to an offense, they might qualify for humanitarian parole, allowing them temporary legal stay within the nation.

Emergency personnel combed the ocean on Saturday using helicopters, an airplane, a cutter, and a Navy combat vessel. Search operations are actively continuing.

Distress Call Transmitted at Approximately 1 a.m.

Coast Guard Lt. Santiago Tamburini said that an emergency distress signal was broadcast from the vessel at roughly 1 a.m. on Friday. An air rescue unit arrived at the location approximately two hours later. It took roughly an hour and a half for the crew, aided by an aviation survival technician, to extract all sixteen individuals from the sea, Tamburini said.

The vessel sank roughly 140 miles west of Ensenada. Multiple incidents involving capsized migrant vessels heading toward California have occurred in recent years.

In May 2025, no fewer than three individuals perished when a craft overturned in the water about 35 miles north of the U.S.-Mexico border. Earlier in 2023, eight victims lost their lives during one of the most fatal maritime trafficking accidents near the U.S. coastline after two vessels neared a San Diego shoreline in dense fog, causing one to flip in the crashing waves.
