Iran-US Talks Stalled, Fresh Efforts Underway

Diplomatic efforts to restore peace to the Middle East have now reached a highly dramatic turning point. Following the outright rejection of each other's proposals last week, the ongoing US-Iran peace talks, mediated by Pakistan, have temporarily fallen through.
However, while negotiations appear to be stalled on the surface, new configuration are forming behind the scenes. One side glimpses the light of a compromise, while the other warns of an impending storm. Speaking to journalists in New Delhi on Friday (May 15), Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi said Tehran has received certain signals from Washington regarding the resumption of talks.
Expressing hope, the Iranian Foreign Minister said, "We hope that through progress in the talks, we can reach a favorable conclusion so that the Strait of Hormuz can be made completely secure." At the same time, Araghchi made Iran's deep mistrust of the United States clear. He stated that Iran has "no trust" in America. He added that the ongoing process mediated by Pakistan has not completely collapsed; rather, it is going through a "difficult phase." On the other hand, US President Donald Trump has indicated that his patience regarding Iran is running thin.
Following a meeting with Chinese President Xi Jinping in Beijing, Trump told reporters on Friday that Iran must open the Strait of Hormuz. He said Washington and Beijing are in agreement on this matter. However, when asked whether China would exert direct pressure on Iran to open the Strait of Hormuz, Trump offered his trademark business-like response: "I am not asking for any favors from anyone. Because when you take a favor from someone, you have to give a favor in return." Amid this diplomatic deadlock, Donald Trump stirred controversy on Saturday by posting an AI-generated image on his social media platform, Truth Social. The image depicts Trump himself surrounded by warships in the middle of a turbulent sea. The caption of the photo read: "This was the calm before the storm."
