US Ambassador to the United Nations Mike Waltz hosted a high-level meeting in New York on Wednesday between Israeli Foreign Minister Gideon Saar and Moroccan Foreign Minister Nasser Bourita, where Israel and Morocco agreed to upgrade their diplomatic ties.

Under the agreement, both nations will elevate their respective diplomatic missions to full embassies and appoint official ambassadors. Beyond diplomatic representation, Saar and Bourita pledged to bolster economic and trade relations between their countries.

To achieve this, the two governments plan to complete two bilateral agreements before the end of this year, focusing specifically on investment protection and the prevention of double taxation.

In a joint statement issued on behalf of all three nations, the US mission to the UN declared, “[The] establishment of full diplomatic, peaceful and friendly relations between Morocco and Israel is in the common interest of both countries and will advance the cause of peace.”

To further strengthen bilateral links, both sides agreed to expand air travel by reinstating direct commercial flights operated by carriers from both nations, while also confirming plans to hold high-level bilateral visits in the coming months.

This diplomatic announcement occurred just one day after the sixth anniversary of the Abraham Accords, an initiative that US President Donald Trump spearheaded during his first term in office.

To date, Morocco, the United Arab Emirates, Bahrain, Sudan, and Kazakhstan have all joined the Abraham Accords, which aim to normalize relations between Israel and Arab as well as Muslim-majority countries.
