USA: Over 1,000 flights canceled as major highway corridor braces for another flood threat

Just days after heavy rain inundated the Northeast and Mid-Atlantic on Saturday, the region is steeling itself for yet another round of severe storms and potential flash flooding on Tuesday.
The highest risk—rated Level 3 out of 5—stretches from northeastern Kentucky all the way to New Jersey, putting major cities including Pittsburgh, Washington D.C., Baltimore, and Philadelphia on high alert. Forecasters warn that numerous severe thunderstorms could bring destructive winds and tornadoes across this zone.
The system is expected to push heavy rain and strong storms across the Ohio Valley by midday, then into the Northeast and Mid-Atlantic through the afternoon and evening. Along the Interstate 95 corridor, some areas may face two separate waves—one around midday, followed by a more intense round between 5 p.m. and 8 p.m.
Flash flooding remains a serious concern for a broad stretch of the I-95 corridor, from Washington D.C. through Philadelphia to New York City. Flood watches have been posted from Delaware to southern New York, where rainfall rates could top one inch per hour, raising the risk of urban flooding in particular. Both Philadelphia and New York City are expected to be in the crosshairs.
Ahead of the storms, airlines have already canceled more than 1,200 flights for Tuesday, with airports in New York City and Washington D.C. bearing the brunt of the disruptions.
