A flight was canceled after a live snake was found inside an aircraft at Fukuoka Airport in Japan. It was later identified as a juvenile Japanese striped snake, a nonvenomous species.
Japan Air Commuter (JAC) said a mechanic spotted the approximately 40-centimeter-long snake under the aircraft's carpet around 1 pm local time on Monday. Experts later identified the snake, which was then captured.
It is not known how the snake entered the aircraft. JAC said this was the first such incident for the company.
The aircraft had arrived in Fukuoka from Izumo Airport in Shimane Prefecture on Monday. It was scheduled to depart Fukuoka for Kagoshima at 12:50 pm. While preparing for takeoff, staff spotted the small animal inside the aircraft.
The flight was subsequently canceled for safety reasons.
