Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) national convenor Arvind Kejriwal was detained outside his residence in Delhi on Saturday while on his way to join a protest demanding the resignation of the chief election commissioner. Delhi Police detained him as he marched toward Jantar Mantar.
Earlier in the day, former Delhi chief minister Kejriwal criticized the central government over strict security measures taken to prevent a protest by the Cockroach Janata Party (CJP) in central Delhi and the detention of the party's top leaders. He said the situation was worse than during the Emergency.
Senior AAP leader Atishi said in a post on X, “Three-time Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal has been brutally detained by Delhi Police for demanding the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar. Modiji, how many more people will you send to jail to save Gyanesh Kumar?”
Kejriwal said on Friday that he and his family members would join the protest. He also urged young people to join the movement demanding the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar over allegations of “vote theft.”
After CJP leaders were detained, Kejriwal said on Saturday morning that Prime Minister Narendra Modi had shown he was “scared” by detaining the “cockroaches” while they were flying.
Earlier, Trinamool Congress leader Mamata Banerjee and former Kerala chief minister Pinarayi Vijayan were also arrested. Delhi Police also detained many people, including leaders from various political parties and journalists.
