Delhi Police have released Neha Bora, president of the All India Students’ Association (AISA), from custody. She was released early Saturday morning.
Police had detained Neha and Abhijit Deepak, founder of the Cockroach Janata Party (CJP), in connection with Friday’s “Lehra Do Tiranga” protest programme. Abhijit Deepak remains in detention.
Delhi Police said action had been taken against Deepak under Sections 126 and 170 of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS), citing the possibility of a breach of peace. He will subsequently be produced before a special executive magistrate’s court.
Police said Neha Bora was released after the necessary custody-related formalities were completed under Section 65 of the law.
However, CJP legal affairs chief Ratna Singh has expressed concern over Deepak’s whereabouts. In a post on social media platform X, she wrote, “Abhijit has been arrested and will be produced before a special executive magistrate’s court. His whereabouts are still unknown. Even his lawyers have been unable to meet him.”
The “Lehra Do Tiranga” programme was organised in Delhi on Friday to demand the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar.
The CJP, opposition parties, various student organisations and civil society groups have been staging protests in different parts of India, alleging irregularities in voter lists and in the Election Commission’s Special Intensive Revision (SIR) process.
Opposition parties have argued that the SIR process risks removing the names of eligible voters from electoral rolls. The Election Commission has stated its position on these allegations. Protests by opposition parties and various student organisations over the issue are continuing.
