Xi Jinping outlines 'Four Principles' for resolving Palestine issue

Chinese President Xi Jinping has outlined four principles to guide efforts to resolve the Palestine issue, emphasizing a political settlement and a two-state solution as priorities.
Xi presented the principles during a meeting with Jordanian King Abdullah II at the Great Hall of the People in Beijing. The Jordanian monarch is visiting China on a state visit.
According to China’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Xi said the first principle is to uphold a political settlement and pursue the two-state solution as the correct path. He called for the resumption of peace talks between Palestine and Israel and the establishment of an independent Palestinian state at an early date.
Second, Xi stressed the principle of “Palestinians governing Palestine.” He said Palestine is the homeland of all Palestinians and that this principle should guide the governance of the West Bank and the postwar reconstruction of Gaza.
Third, he called for humanitarian principles to be upheld. The international community, particularly the UN Security Council, should fulfill its responsibility to protect civilians, ensure the delivery of humanitarian aid and help end the humanitarian crisis, he said.
Fourth, Xi emphasized fairness and justice. He called for adherence to international law, efforts to address both the immediate symptoms and underlying causes of the conflict, and practical steps toward achieving a comprehensive, just and lasting resolution of the Palestinian issue.
King Abdullah II praised China for what he described as its commitment to justice in Middle East affairs and its support for the legitimate causes of Arab countries. He said China’s position is highly important to countries across the region.
Jordan, he added, will maintain close communication with China, continue working to reduce tensions and contribute to peace and prosperity for people throughout the Middle East.
