The area of Chanditala in Hooghly turned tense on Sunday over protests against the attack on Abhishek Banerjee, the All India General Secretary of the Trinamool Congress (TMC), in Sonarpur, West Bengal, India. It is alleged that Trinamool MP from Serampore, Kalyan Banerjee, was attacked while going to participate in a protest program. He sustained a head injury in the attack and received primary medical treatment.
TMC sources claim that a delegation led by Kalyan Banerjee was going to Chanditala police station to submit a memorandum protesting the attack on Abhishek Banerjee. At that time, a group of protesters blocked their way by showing black flags. The situation quickly became heated. It is alleged that along with slogans targeting the MP, bricks, stones, and pebbles were thrown. A stone hit his head, causing him to fall to the ground.
TMC workers and supporters present for the MP's security quickly surrounded her and arranged for primary treatment. Later, feeling somewhat better, he joined the sit-in protest in front of Chanditala police station.
After the incident, Kalyan Banerjee questioned the role of the police. He alleged that the police did not take appropriate steps during the attack. She demanded to know why immediate action was not taken against the attackers. During a conversation with the police, the MP claimed that she was attacked in a planned manner and that the matter should not be taken lightly.
However, the police stated that if a written complaint is submitted regarding the incident, they would investigate according to the law and take necessary action. Not satisfied with this assurance, TMC workers and supporters continued their protest in front of the police station. As a result, tension spread in the Chanditala area on Sunday afternoon.
Meanwhile, TMC protest programs continue in various districts of the state following the alleged attack on Abhishek Banerjee in Sonarpur on Saturday. Processions, sit-ins, and protest programs have been organized in several districts including Hooghly and West Burdwan. The TMC claims that such attacks are happening with the backing of the BJP. Amidst the recent political situation in the state, the political uproar has intensified following allegations of attacks on two TMC MPs in succession.
