Trump Signals Ceasefire Deal with Iran

US President Donald Trump said a potential peace agreement with Iran is nearing completion and claimed the Strait of Hormuz would reopen as part of the deal.

Trump shared the remarks on his social media platform Truth Social on Sunday, saying, “A deal has been largely completed through negotiations.”

He said he held “very good” discussions with the leaders of Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates, Qatar, Pakistan, Turkey, Egypt, Jordan, and Bahrain. He also noted that the agreement could be implemented based on a final understanding among the United States, Iran, and the countries involved.

Trump also said the agreement could include reopening the Strait of Hormuz, adding that negotiations are continuing over the final details of the deal. He added that negotiations are now underway over the “final matters and details” of the deal and that an announcement would come very soon. However, he did not comment on Iran’s demand to include Lebanon in the agreement to halt Israeli attacks. The US president also said he had a “very good” phone conversation with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.

A Reuters report said Iran and Pakistan have sent a revised proposal to the United States aimed at ending the war and reopening the Strait of Hormuz. Citing two Pakistani sources, the report added that Washington could respond to the proposal by Sunday.

Meanwhile, US Secretary of State Marco Rubio said some progress has been made in talks with Iran. He also indicated that the United States could make an important announcement on the matter within the next few days.

According to Al Jazeera, Donald Trump entered the Oval Office amid intensified diplomatic efforts over a ceasefire agreement. He reportedly held phone discussions there with leaders from several Middle Eastern countries.

However, Iran’s semi-official news agency Fars News Agency rejected claims that the Strait of Hormuz would be fully reopened. The outlet reported that under the latest exchanged draft, even if a potential agreement is reached, Iran would retain authority over managing the Strait of Hormuz, determining shipping routes, setting schedules and procedures, and granting permissions.

Earlier, Iran’s semi-official news agency Tasnim News Agency reported that Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi discussed Pakistan’s latest mediation efforts to end the war with Egyptian Foreign Minister Badr Abdelatty. Before that, he also held talks with the Prime Minister of Qatar and the Foreign Minister of Oman. On Friday, Pakistan Army Chief Asim Munir also held two rounds of meetings in Tehran.
