A high-profile meeting between U.S. President Donald Trump and Chinese President Xi Jinping, held in Beijing, has concluded.
Chinese state broadcaster CCTV reported that the talks lasted for nearly two hours. After the meeting, President Xi accompanied President Trump on a visit to the Temple of Heaven. When asked how the discussions went, Trump replied that his talks with Xi were “fantastic.” He did not respond to follow-up questions about whether Taiwan was discussed.
Earlier on Thursday, Trump held talks with Xi at the Great Hall of the People. The meeting was attended by chief executives of many of the United States’ largest companies.
In his opening remarks, Trump signaled optimism toward China’s leadership, saying, “It’s an honor to be with you. It’s an honor to be your friend, and the relationship between the United States and China is going to be even better than before.” He reiterated his hope that United States–China relations would improve further.
In his opening statement, President Xi said he has always believed that shared interests between China and the United States are more important than their differences. He added that 2026 should become a historic and milestone year for Beijing–Washington relations—one that carries forward the past and opens new opportunities for the future. (Al jazeera and AP)
