The path for actor-turned-politician Thalapathy Vijay to become Chief Minister is finally opening up. Uncertainty had been looming over the formation of the Tamil Nadu government since Friday night.
Ultimately, Vijay's party, Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK), is set to receive support from the regional party VCK. With VCK's support confirmed, there are no further obstacles for Vijay to form the government.
In the 234-seat Tamil Nadu Assembly, 118 seats are required for a majority. However, no single party or alliance achieved that mark. South Indian star Vijay's TVK emerged as the single largest party by winning 108 seats. Since Vijay won in two seats, their number of MLAs stands at 107. To reach the "magic figure" for government formation, Vijay needed the support of 11 more MLAs.
Initially, the Tamil Nadu Congress announced that it would support TVK. In this election, Congress won five seats in the state. Despite receiving support from Congress, the support of six more MLAs was still needed to reach the magic figure.
On Friday, the two left-wing parties, CPM and CPI, announced their support. The number of seats they won is four. Following that, the support of two more MLAs was still required. Today, Saturday, VCK chief Thol. Thirumavalavan announced that they would provide unconditional support to Vijay's party for government formation.
After receiving this support, Vijay will once again request Governor Rajendra Vishwanath Arlekar to form the government. He had staked his claim to the Governor at least three times in the last four days. However, Governor Vishwanath had stated that he would not invite TVK to form the government without a support letter from 118 MLAs. Finally, with the support of VCK, the deadlock over seats has been resolved.
In this election, the DMK-Congress-Left alliance won 74 seats, while the AIADMK-BJP alliance won 53 seats. However, the Congress and the Left parties have gradually left M.K. Stalin's side.
