BCB’s ‘Automatic Win’ Election Today

Unless there is an unexpected turn of events, Tamim Iqbal is likely to become the next elected president of the BCB.
The election for the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) board of directors is being held today. Through elections in three categories, 23 councillors secure director posts, while the National Sports Council nominates 2 members. These 25 directors will then elect the president and vice-president.
However, voting is taking place only for 12 director posts under the club category, where 16 candidates are contesting. Representatives from district and divisional sports associations, former players, and various educational boards and organisations have already been elected unopposed.
Recently, the term “automatic win” has gained attention. In various contexts, students have demanded automatic promotion. The BCB election has also been described in similar terms, as only a nominal contest is taking place in the club category, and the likely winners are already widely known.
The most active contest is in the club category (Category 1), where 16 candidates are competing for 12 seats. Among them, 8 are almost certain to win, while the remaining 4 seats are being contested by 8 candidates. Club councillors held a celebratory event on Friday ahead of the election, effectively marking what many view as a foregone conclusion.
After the event, the head of the ad-hoc committee, Tamim Iqbal, promised to ensure a fair election saying: “The main challenge for the ad-hoc committee was the election. A lot has happened over the past two years, and I have also said many things. Bangladesh cricket was going through instability. Through the election on the 7th, we hope everything will return to a stable condition. Whoever is elected will take Bangladesh cricket forward.”
The BCB stated that two representatives from the ICC came to observe the election process. In the previous board election, allegations of irregularities led the National Sports Council to dissolve the elected board headed by Aminul Islam Bulbul. Tamim Iqbal, who now heads the ad-hoc committee, had previously strongly criticised Bulbul for contesting the presidency while in office, though he himself is now participating in the election after withdrawing from earlier contests.
Observers note that, once again, politically aligned individuals are likely to dominate cricket administration. Some recommendations from an inquiry committee aimed at improving transparency were not implemented, and the controversial e-voting and postal voting system remains in place.
Unless something highly dramatic happens, Tamim Iqbal is expected to become the next elected president of the BCB.
The election is being held at the BCB headquarters inside the Sher-e-Bangla National Cricket Stadium. On the same day, Australia’s cricket team will begin practice at the Mirpur Academy and indoor facilities ahead of the upcoming series, while Bangladesh will also hold training sessions in the afternoon.
