Most of the belongings of the eight luggage bags stolen from a covered van during cricketers trip from Dhaka to Rajshahi have been recovered. The players were on a trip play a National Cricket League (NCL) match in Rajshahi.
The recovered items were handed over to the affected cricketers through the joint efforts of police and the BCB's security department. Police have detained two alleged burglars out of four suspected in the stealing.
The victims whose belongings were lost from the BCB's covered van are Rajshahi team's spinning all-rounder SM Meherab Hossain, pacer Mohor Sheikh Antar, pacer Ali Mohammad Walid, and team boy Abdul Kader. Rajshahi team manager Taukir Ahmed told the media, "As soon as we learned about the missing luggage, we informed the police and BCB. Due to their quick and commendable efforts, the players got their belongings back within a short time."
Last Tuesday, after the match, the Rajshahi team cricketers reached Rajshahi by air, but 54 bags, including their kit bags and personal luggage bags, were transported by road in a BCB covered van. On the way, during a meal break in Natore or Puthia area of Rajshahi, a gang of thieves broke the lock of the covered van and stole eight luggage bags. On Wednesday morning, while unloading the bags at a hotel in Rajshahi, Meherab Hossain noticed the matter and filed a general diary (GD) with Rajpara Police Station.
After the GD, Rajshahi District Police, Natore District Police, and the BCB's security department started a joint operation within the shortest possible time. With the help of technology and tip, police recovered most of the stolen items and detained two members of the thief gang. Later, the recovered items were handed over to the cricketers at the office of the Rajshahi District Police Superintendent.
Although most of the belongings and equipment could be recovered, Tk 3 lakh in cash kept in Meherab's bag and pacer Mohor Sheikh Antar's luggage bag have still not been recovered. Mohor Sheikh said, "Although almost all the equipment and belongings of the teammates have been found, the police have not yet been able to recover my bag. And there is no specific news about Meherab's cash either."
Police operations are continuing with the two detained accused to recover the rest of the belongings and the missing bags. From October 18, Rajshahi will face the next round of NCL matches at the Rajshahi Divisional Stadium on home ground. Before that, the retrieving of the players' belongings has brought some relief to the team.
