Three superstars of the football - Lionel Messi, Cristiano Ronaldo, and Neymar - played in the World Cup 2026. Their careers are essentially at an end, and in their final world cup, all three had to bid farewell in tears.
None of the teams – Argentina, Portugal, or Brazil - captured the title.
Among the three teams, Brazil was the first to exit this World Cup. Their journey came to a halt in the Round of 16 after a 2-1 defeat to Norway.
Following the match, Neymar broke down in tears. At one point, he declared, “This is the end.”
International media said the statement is an indication of his retirement. Recently, Neymar has begun training to return to club football.
Portugal also exited in the Round of 16. They lost 1-0 to Spain in a knockout match held in Dallas. Throughout the tournament, aside from a brace against a weak Uzbekistan side, Cristiano Ronaldo was a shadow of his former self.
He lacked acceptance even within his own team, as teammates refused to pass him the ball. CR7 wandered the field helplessly, and winning the world cup was not to be for him. When his exit was confirmed and he began to cry, his teammates were not seen coming forward to comfort him.
Argentina reached the final for the second consecutive time, but they could not stand their ground against a formidable Spain in the battle for the title.
In a lackluster performance on Monday at MetLife Stadium, the team lost by a 1-0 margin. After the match, Lionel Messi broke down in tears. At the sunset of his career, another world cup victory was not meant to be for the Argentine football magician.
