Bangladesh's golden run in ODI cricket continues. Swept away by that momentum, Australia was soundly defeated, giving Bangladesh the joy of beating them in an ODI for the first time since 2005. In the first ODI of the series in Mirpur, the hosts secured an 86-run victory over the Aussies via the Duckworth-Lewis method.
Prior to this, in 22 ODI encounters, Bangladesh had defeated Australia only once. That historic victory came in Cardiff back in 2005. Since then, Bangladesh has managed to defeat every other Test-playing nation and has achieved numerous series victories, but the opportunity to beat Australia had remained elusive.
Of course, Bangladesh did not play a bilateral series against the Aussies during this period, and their encounters in ICC tournaments only resulted in disappointing losses. This time, however, an opportunity to conquer the Aussies arrived on home soil, and Mehidy Hasan Miraz's team wasted no time, defeating them in the very first match.
An all-round performance from Mosaddek Hossain, who returned to the squad after four years, allowed Bangladesh to taste victory against Australia after 21 years. Bangladesh posted 284 runs for the loss of 8 wickets, heavily anchored by Mosaddek’s innings. Earlier, Tanzid Tamim’s 54 off 44 balls and Najmul Hossain Shanto’s 67 off 86 balls set up a strong foundation. Mosaddek remained unbeaten on 86 off 70 balls, hitting 7 fours and 3 sixes.
Later, Nahid Rana's 4-wicket haul, combined with 2 wickets each from Mustafizur and Mosaddek, sealed the 86-run victory for Bangladesh. Australia was halted at 191 for 9 in 42.2 overs when play could not be resumed.
After a considerable wait, Bangladesh was officially declared the winner. Returning to the national team for the first time since 2022, Mosaddek was named the player of the match in his very first appearance.
