Children's Sports: PM urges media outlets for lead news coverage

PM Tarique Rahman enjoys Notun Kuri sports at Army Staidum on Monday. Agamir Somoy.

The national-level closing and prize distribution ceremony of 'Notun Kuri Sports 2025-26'—a national competition organized by the Ministry of Youth and Sports to discover sporting talent among adolescents—was held with great pomp at the Army Stadium in Banani, Dhaka.

Prime Minister Tarique Rahman, graced the occasion as the chief guest, distributed prizes among the winners, and delivered a speech.

At the very beginning of his speech, the Prime Minister made a special appeal to media professionals. Addressing editors and journalists of print and electronic media, he said that although there are various types of news in society, the news of today's children and adolescents developing their sports and talents should be made the lead or main news in tomorrow's newspapers. He emphasized that these children and today's event represent the future of Bangladesh.

Addressing the students, the Prime Minister said that many schools still face shortages of seating space or fans, and the government is continuously working to solve these problems. However, he stressed that the primary responsibility for properly building the nation rests with this generation of youth and children. He expressed his firm optimism that from among these children sitting in the galleries will emerge the country's future doctors, architects, engineers, and national- and international-level cricketers, swimmers, and tennis players. He urged them never to think of themselves as small and to work hard to build themselves into capable individuals.

At one point in his speech, the Tarique Rahman sought cooperation from the country's future citizens on three specific issues. He called on them not to litter plastic or garbage indiscriminately but to dispose of them in designated places, and to come forward to keep the water of rivers, canals, and ponds clean. He urged them to regularly plant trees around their homes and schools to maintain environmental balance. He also spoke about showing kindness to animals and preventing any form of cruelty towards them.

The Prime Minister assured that the government will continue to provide all-out support to students in their studies, sports, music, and artistic pursuits. At the same time, he expressed his heartfelt thanks and gratitude from the core of his heart to parents, teachers, and coaches for their relentless efforts behind the students reaching this stage. He expressed his hope that these young athletes will one day win trophies on the international stage and bring glory to the country.
