Bangladesh remain under pressure despite bowling out the West Indies for 356 on the second day of the Sylhet Test. The hosts lost three wickets for 88 runs in 40 overs in their first innings by the end of the day. Bangladesh still trail the Caribbean side by 268 runs.

Bangladesh had to work hard to break the West Indies’ final wicket partnership at the start of the day. Jomel Warrican and Jayden Seales added 33 runs before Mehidy Hasan Miraz finally broke the stand. The West Indies were eventually bowled out for 356.

Hasan Mahmud was Bangladesh’s standout bowler. He claimed six wickets in an innings for the second time in his career. His six victims included Kevin Hodge, Kevin Wickham, Amir Jangoo, Roston Chase and Joshua Bishop.

After taking five wickets against Afghanistan last October, Hasan claimed his first five wicket haul on home soil this time. Taskin Ahmed took two wickets while Miraz also claimed two. Taijul Islam and Nayeem Hasan went wicketless.

Bangladesh, however, suffered early setbacks with the bat. Nayeem Hasan, who opened in a Test for the first time because of Shadman Islam’s injury, was dismissed for five. Tanzid Hasan followed after scoring 16 as Bangladesh lost two wickets for just 22 runs.

Captain Najmul Hossain Shanto and Towhid Hridoy tried to steady the innings with a 29 run partnership. However, Shanto was bowled by Shamar Joseph for 18.

Hridoy then continued alongside Mushfiqur Rahim for the remainder of the day.

At stumps, Hridoy was unbeaten on 29 while Mushfiq was not out on 19. Bangladesh, who had lost three wickets for 51 runs, added 37 runs for the fourth wicket.

Despite the partnership, the hosts will need to build a substantial stand on the third day to surpass the West Indies’ first innings total.
