Speculation had been ongoing since the World Cup. Would Lionel Scaloni, who led Argentina to World Cup glory, step down as head coach? However, there is good news for Argentine fans. Reports say Scaloni has agreed to remain in charge of the team until the next World Cup.
According to international media reports, Scaloni has agreed to stay with Argentina under several conditions. However, the conditions have not yet been made public. Initially, he will sign a two year contract until 2028. If both parties agree, the contract could be extended until 2030.
Reports say Scaloni agreed to remain in charge after taking some time to consider his future and meeting with Claudio Tapia during the recent FIFA international window. This would bring his coaching tenure, which began in 2018, closer to a full decade.
An official announcement could come within the next few days or during the November 9 to 17 FIFA international window when Scaloni will be in Argentina.
Argentina will face Uruguay at La Bombonera on November 13 and Costa Rica at the Mario Alberto Kempes Stadium in Cordoba on November 17. Scaloni’s current contract expires in December.
Earlier, on October 6, Argentina’s coach faced questions about his future following Lionel Messi’s farewell match against Benin. Scaloni said that day, “If everything goes well, I will continue as coach.” However, he also said there was no new update on the contract renewal at that time.
