Manchester United staged a dramatic comeback at Old Trafford, overturning a two-goal deficit to defeat Roma 3-2 and end a nine-game winless streak spanning 54 days.
Matias Soule opened the scoring for Roma by carving through a disorganized Manchester United defense, placing head coach Michael Carrick under intense pressure. Shortly after, Donyell Malen converted a penalty kick to double Roma’s advantage. The disappointed home crowd booed United off the pitch at the halftime break.
United’s situation worsened early in the second half when Carlos Baleba suffered a hamstring injury and left the field. However, Matheus Cunha earned a penalty for United, which Bruno Fernandes converted on a retake, shifting the match momentum.
A costly mistake by Roma defender Leonardo Balerdi followed, as his poor clearance allowed Cunha to slot home the equalizing goal. Moments later, Shea Lacey delivered a pass to Cunha, who struck a brilliant near-post finish to complete the comeback to the delight of the crowd.
Cunha then received a red card for a foolish foul, forcing United to endure a tense final stretch. Nevertheless, Manchester United held firm to secure their first victory in 10 matches.
Carrick walked off the pitch to loud applause after guiding his squad to an improbable and spirited Champions League triumph.
