Eulalia Marzetti, the mother of Argentina national football team coach Lionel Scaloni, has died. Her death was confirmed on Wednesday. She was 74 and had been suffering from a serious illness for a long time. Her death has cast a shadow of grief over Scaloni’s family, his hometown of Pujato and the Argentine football community.
According to Rosario’s Radio 2, Marzetti died at her home on Tuesday night with her husband, Angel, by her side. It has not been confirmed whether Scaloni was in Buenos Aires when his mother died or was returning from Mallorca in Spain. Her funeral is expected to be held privately in the presence of close family members and friends.
Eulalia lived with her husband Angel in Pujato. Her husband was locally known as “Chiche.” Scaloni would visit his mother whenever he had time off from his national team duties. She had served as a municipal judge and raised three children: Scaloni, Mauro and Corina.
Scaloni publicly revealed his mother’s illness five years ago. After Argentina’s World Cup qualifying victory over Peru on October 15, 2021, he said he was not in a mental state to think far ahead about the World Cup because of difficult personal circumstances.
However, Scaloni continued in his role. After winning the Copa America in 2021 and the 2022 World Cup in Qatar, he dedicated the achievements to his mother. Overcome with emotion after the Copa America triumph, he said, “I want to dedicate this victory to my mother. A few days ago, she suffered a serious problem and is fighting.”
The Argentine Football Association (AFA) has expressed grief over Scaloni’s mother’s death. AFA President Claudio Tapia also extended his condolences on social media, conveying his support for Scaloni and his family during this difficult time.
