The Mirpur green turned into a stage for one of Test cricket’s finest spectacles, showcasing just how thrilling and captivating the format can be. After five days of classic battle between bat and ball, the contest transformed into a breathtaking epic in its final moments. At the end of Day 4, the Mirpur Test appeared headed toward a dull draw. But the script changed dramatically as Bangladesh embraced the timeless charm and excitement of Test cricket to defeat Pakistan by 104 runs and produce a new epic chapter.
The Tigers defeated Pakistan in a Test on home soil for the first time. Two years ago, Najmul Hossain Shanto’s side whitewashed Pakistan 2-0 in their own backyard, and they carried that momentum into Mirpur as well. Chasing Bangladesh’s target of 268, Pakistan folded for 163 in their second innings. The victory also handed Bangladesh their first win of the current World Test Championship cycle.
Yet Pakistan still held the advantage deep into the final session on Day 5. They needed 152 runs to win with seven wickets in hand, and even a draw remained within reach. But Taijul Islam struck immediately after tea. Although umpire Richard Kettleborough initially turned down the appeal, Bangladesh reviewed the decision and removed the well-set Abdullah Fazal for 66.
That wicket triggered the collapse of Pakistan’s batting lineup. Nahid Rana and Taijul dismantled the visitors with a superb bowling display as wickets fell at regular intervals. Mohammad Rizwan failed to read Nahid’s 147-kph inswinger and lost his wicket for 15. Bangladesh’s pace sensation turned into a nightmare for the visitors. Nahid claimed five wickets for 40 runs with two maidens in 9.5 overs. Taijul Islam and Taskin Ahmed picked up two wickets each, while Mehidy Hasan Miraz took one. Captain Najmul Hossain Shanto won Player of the Match honors.
