Steven Smith had been the main obstacle in Bangladesh’s push to bowl Australia out quickly. By dismissing him, Hasan Mahmud completed his five-wicket haul in the innings. Achieving the feat against a full-strength Australian side on their home soil is a huge source of pride for Hasan. It is the third time he has taken five wickets in a Test innings.
Smith was on 71 and closing in on his first century against Bangladesh. Among Test-playing nations, Bangladesh is the only team against whom the Australian batter has yet to score a century. He will have to wait a little longer after Hasan dismissed him for 71.
With Smith falling at 189, Bangladesh’s chances of bowling Australia out for less than 200 have increased.
