Hosts Mexico opened the FIFA World Cup with a win on the first day of the tournament. On the second day, fellow co-host Canada avoided defeat but could not secure victory, settling for a 1-1 draw against Bosnia and Herzegovina in their opening Group B match.

Toronto hosted a vibrant opening ceremony at the start of the day, continuing the tradition of a grand spectacle in another host nation before the on-field action began.

The second half proved more entertaining than the first, with Canada dominating large portions of play. The hosts created at least three clear scoring opportunities after the break and could have scored four goals in total against Bosnia and Herzegovina. However, poor finishing, the woodwork, and strong defending repeatedly denied them a breakthrough, leaving them frustrated despite securing their first World Cup point at home.

Bosnia and Herzegovina, who entered the tournament after a memorable qualification campaign that eliminated Italy, started aggressively despite leaving star striker Edin Dzeko out of the starting XI. Their attacking intensity did not drop, and they took the lead in the 21st minute. Josip Lukic scored with a header from a corner delivered by Sead Kolasinac.

No further goals followed in the first half, but Canada applied heavy pressure after the break. In the 54th minute, Canada came close to equalising when Bosnia captain Kolasinac cleared a shot off the goal line. Richie Laryea was particularly unlucky, as his follow-up effort struck the post after the clearance.

In the 55th minute, Ermedin Demirovic failed to beat the Canadian goalkeeper in a one-on-one situation, missing another chance for Bosnia. Just before the 70th minute, Canada were again denied an equaliser. However, they finally broke through in the 79th minute when Cyle Larin’s shot from inside the box deflected off a Bosnia defender, wrong-footing the goalkeeper. The equaliser ensured Canada walked away with a point from their opening match.
