Customs official Bullet Bairagi (35), who went missing while returning to Cumilla after completing basic training in Chattogram, was killed in a planned manner after being picked up in a CNG auto-rickshaw. Members of an organized mugging syndicate beat and robbed him before throwing him out of the moving vehicle, resulting in his immediate death.
The Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) has arrested a total of five individuals in connection with the incident, including four who were inside the CNG. They were apprehended during raids across various areas of Cumilla on Sunday.
The arrested individuals are: Md. Sohag, Ismail Hossain Jony, Emran Hossain Hridoy, Rahat Hossain Jewel, and Sujan.
Wing Commander Entekhab Chowdhury, Director of RAB’s Legal and Media Wing, provided these details during a press conference held today, Monday afternoon, at the RAB Media Center in Karwan Bazar, Dhaka.
Entekhab Chowdhury stated that Bullet Bairagi went missing around 11:00 PM on April 24 while returning to Cumilla from his training in Chattogram. Approximately 12 hours later, at around 8:45 AM on April 25, the Moynamoti Highway Police recovered his body near a hotel in the Kotbari area along the Dhaka-Chattogram highway. The body bore multiple injury marks.
Following the incident, the victim's mother filed a murder case against unidentified individuals at the Cumilla Sadar Dakshin Model Police Station.
RAB reported that intelligence surveillance and investigations began immediately after the incident. Based on secret information, raids were conducted on Sunday, leading to the arrest of the four individuals who were in the CNG. Additionally, Sujan was arrested while in possession of the victim's mobile phone.
During the operation, several pieces of evidence were recovered, including the CNG used in the murder, a cleaver, a switchgear knife, and a hammer.
Initial interrogation revealed that the arrestees are active members of an organized criminal gang. Their primary tactic involved targeting long-distance passengers, picking them up in their CNG, and committing robbery at knifepoint.
On the night of the incident, Bullet Bairagi was targeted after he got off a bus in the Jagarjhuli area of Cumilla. After being pulled into the CNG, he was beaten and robbed before being pushed out of the speeding vehicle. He sustained a fatal head injury and died at the scene.
RAB further noted that the arrested individuals have multiple prior cases against them related to theft, robbery, and narcotics at various police stations. Legal proceedings against them are currently underway.
