Leaders and activists of the Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal (JCD) and Bangladesh Islami Chhatra Shibir have locked into a clash at the Shahbagh Police Station in the capital. Several people were injured in the conflict-- that broke out Thursday evening-- including Akhter Hossain's panel members from the DUCSU elections, Social Welfare Secretary AB Zubair and Literary Secretary Musaddiq, along with some members of the Dhaka University Journalists' Association.
Eyewitnesses reported that at one point during the clash, an attack was carried out on Musaddiq after a group entered the police station premises. AB Zubair was also injured during the incident.
According to sources, Chhatra Dal activists took a position at Shahbagh in the evening to protest against "underground politics" on campus and derogatory remarks made about Zaima Rahman. The situation escalated into a chase and counter-chase when a group of Chhatra Shibir activists, reportedly led by AB Zubair and Musaddiq, arrived at the scene. Facing the assault, the DUCSU leaders took shelter inside the Shahbagh Police Station.
Abdullah Al Mahmud, a candidate from the Shibir-backed panel in the DUCSU elections, and Sayeduzzaman Alvi, an executive member of Masterda Surja Sen Hall, were also inside the Shahbagh Police Station til filing of this report around 9PM.
Chhatra Dal leaders have alleged that Abdullah Al Mahmud, a member candidate from the Chhatra Shibir panel in the DUCSU elections, posted an AI-generated fake image of Zaima Rahman from his social media account.
However, Mahmud denied the allegations, claiming that the image was circulated in his name to frame him. When he and his associates went to the Shahbagh Police Station to file a General Diary (GD) regarding the matter, Chhatra Dal activists stormed in the station upon receiving the news. It was at this point that they were allegedly attacked.
