Bollywood actor Imran Khan was detained by police while attempting to join a protest in Mumbai, India, on Saturday. He was among several hundred protesters detained while expressing solidarity with a demonstration demanding the resignation of the country’s Chief Election Commissioner, Gyanesh Kumar, on October 10.
According to Indian media reports, the Cockroach Janata Party (CJP) had called for a protest at Jantar Mantar in Delhi. In solidarity with the demonstration, a rally was organized at August Kranti Maidan in Mumbai. However, police prevented protesters from gathering at the venue because they did not have the necessary permission.
On Saturday, police detained several people, including Imran Khan, from areas around the protest site. Officers launched an operation to disperse the protesters, and those detained were taken into police custody at various locations across Mumbai.
Tushar Gandhi, the great-grandson of Mahatma Gandhi, was also scheduled to take part in the protest. However, police detained him while he was on his way to the rally venue. The demonstration was organized by the group Hum Bharat Ke Log.
Police said the organizers had not obtained the required permission to hold a gathering at August Kranti Maidan. They said the detentions were a precautionary measure to maintain law and order.
Meanwhile, extensive security arrangements were made in Delhi ahead of the CJP’s protest. The party has demanded Gyanesh Kumar’s resignation, alleging irregularities in the voter list revision process.
Imran Khan is a well-known Bollywood actor. His detention in connection with the Mumbai protest has drawn attention in the country’s political and entertainment circles.
