Two Bangladeshi nationals were killed by gunfire opened by India’s Border Security Force (BSF) at the Kasba border in Brahmanbaria. The incident occurred around 11:15 pm on Friday night in the Indian side of the Dhajnagar border area under Kasba upazila.
The identity of one of the deceased has been confirmed. He was Md. Morshalin (22), son of Hebzu Mia from the Dhajnagar Batanbari area of Gopinathpur Union in Kasba upazila. Morshalin was a student of Shah Alam Degree College.
Family members of the deceased said several local people came to their house at night and called Morshalin outside, taking him toward the border. After reaching the area, BSF personnel who were patrolling the Indian side of the border opened fire on them. Morshalin was shot and died on the spot. Later, the BSF took his body inside Indian territory.
Lieutenant Colonel SM Shariful Islam, commander of BGB’s 60 Battalion, said that at least 15 Bangladeshis did intrude into India via Dhajnagar border on Friday night with the help of Indian smugglers, allegedly for smuggling purposes. While returning with goods, Morshalin was killed by gunfire by the BSF’s 49 Battalion. Another person later died while undergoing treatment at a hospital in India.
He added that efforts are underway to bring back the bodies of the deceased by corresponding with the BSF commandant. A protest note has been sent to the BSF, and the process for holding a flag meeting is also underway.
