50 Illegal structures demolished along Buriganga riverbank, 100 tons of waste removed

An operation to demolish illegal structures and remove waste was conducted in the capital's Ilambagh area on Monday. Agamir Somoy.

In an operation in the Islambagh area of Dhaka to prevent occupation and pollution of the Buriganga River, relevant agencies have removed approximately 100 tons of plastic and other waste. At that time, 50 illegal structures were demolished.

The operation was conducted on Monday (October 12) in the Islambagh area under Lalbagh and Kamrangirchar police stations. To implement the High Court's directive, the Bangladesh Inland Water Transport Authority (BIWTA), Dhaka District Administration, Dhaka South City Corporation, and Department of Environment jointly carried out the operation. Two excavators and five drum trucks were used for waste removal and demolition.

According to relevant sources, following a petition filed in continuation of a writ petition by Human Rights and Peace for Bangladesh, the High Court on September 2 ordered the removal of waste and ensuring cleanliness in the Islambagh area. To implement that directive, the operation was conducted under the initiative of a committee formed with representatives of the relevant agencies.

BIWTA Joint Director Mobarak Hossain Majumder, Executive Magistrate Ashraf Uddin, Lalbagh Assistant Commissioner (Land) Md. Aminul Islam, and Department of Environment Dhaka Metropolitan Office Inspector Md. Tarikul Islam, along with officials of the relevant agencies, were present during the operation.

Authorities said such coordinated operations will continue until the activities of controlling pollution in the Buriganga River, removing plastic and other waste, and demolishing illegal structures are completed.
