University Teachers Training Academy to be established in Bangladesh

University Grants Commission (UGC) Member Professor Dr. Abdullah Al Mamun has said an initiative is being taken to establish a “University Teachers Training Academy” to enhance the professional skills of teachers.
He disclosed the information at a workshop held at the Nawab Nawab Ali Chowdhury Senate Building of Dhaka University on Wednesday, September 30.
Speaking about reforms and quality improvement in the education system, Professor Mamun said, “The current government’s election manifesto has placed emphasis on making the education sector employment oriented and productive. Therefore, alongside developing educational infrastructure, importance must be given to improving the quality of teaching, applying modern teaching methods, enhancing research capacity and providing regular professional training for teachers.”
He said, “The current government is advancing the establishment of a University Teachers Training Academy to institutionalize teacher training. Through this initiative, regular professional development training opportunities will be created for teachers of public and private universities across the country. The government has already allocated funds for this.”
He said the training center will not be limited to conventional classroom-based training. Various modern and necessary facilities including swimming and driving will be available for teachers. This will provide them with opportunities for training and professional development in an integrated environment.
Dhaka University Pro Vice Chancellor (Academic) Professor Dr. Abdus Salam was the chief guest at the workshop. Dean of the Faculty of Arts Professor Dr. Md. Abul Kalam Sarker was the special guest. Professor Dr. S M Hafizur Rahman, Director of the Institutional Quality Assurance Cell (IQAC) of Dhaka University, chaired the event.
Newly appointed university teachers participated in the day long workshop organized by the IQAC. The workshop discussed the academic responsibilities of new teachers, professional development, quality teaching and various important aspects of the higher education system at the university level.
