CID seeks seven day remand of villain Don for three reasons in Salman Shah murder case

The Criminal Investigation Department (CID) has filed an application seeking a seven day remand of villain Ashraful Haque Don for three reasons in the murder case of film actor Salman Shah. The case’s investigating officer and CID Police Inspector Md. Mujibur Rahman filed the application on August 20. Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Jewel Rana has fixed Thursday for a hearing in the presence of the accused.
Court sources confirmed the information on Monday.
The application cited three reasons for questioning the accused in remand. It said the incident described in the case’s First Information Report (FIR) is a widely discussed and sensational murder case. The victim is popular film actor Chowdhury Mohammad Shahriar Emon, also known as Salman Shah. The victim’s mother has been demanding an impartial investigation into the incident since it occurred.
She has been active in various newspapers and on social media demanding an impartial investigation. In this situation, for the sake of a proper investigation into the case, if accused Ashraful Haque Don is taken into police remand and questioned then there is a possibility that the actual mystery surrounding the case will be uncovered.
The application said accused Ashraful Haque Don is a highly strategic and cunning person. If he is taken into police custody and extensively questioned then it will be possible to determine the whereabouts of other accomplices involved in the incident and arrest them. Therefore, police remand and questioning are necessary to uncover the actual mystery of the case and for an intensive investigation.
The application also said that despite a travel ban against accused Don he fled abroad through various tactics. It is necessary to determine why and at whose instigation he fled despite the travel ban. If he is extensively questioned to uncover information related to this matter and the actual mystery of the case then there is a possibility that the actual mystery will be revealed.
Earlier on August 9, immigration police arrested accused Don at Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport. He was then handed over to the CID. Don was produced before the court. CID Police Inspector Arifur Rahman then filed an application seeking to keep him in jail.
Following the application, he was sent to jail.
Earlier on October 20, the court ordered that the unnatural death case filed over Salman Shah’s death be accepted as a murder case. Following the order, a murder case was filed late that night on behalf of Salman Shah’s mother Neela Chowdhury. Her brother Mohammad Alamgir Kumkum filed the case as the complainant.
Eleven people including former wife Samira Haque and villain Don were named as accused in the case. The other accused are Samira Haque’s mother Latifa Haque Lusi, businessman Aziz Mohammad Bhai, villain Don, Debit, Javed, Faruk, Ruby, A. Sattar, Saju and Rizvi Ahmed alias Farhad.
On September 6, 1996, the body of film actor Salman Shah was recovered from his residence in Eskaton in the capital. At that time, Salman Shah’s father Komruddin Ahmed Chowdhury initially filed an unnatural death case. Later on July 24, 1997, an application was filed seeking to convert the complaint into a murder case.
The court ordered the CID to investigate the matter. After completing the investigation, the CID submitted its final report to the court on November 3, 1997. The report described the incident as a suicide. Later on November 25 of that year, the Dhaka CMM Court accepted the final report.
However, Komruddin Ahmed Chowdhury rejected the report and filed a revision case. Later on, May 19, 2003, the court sent the case for a judicial inquiry.
After a long 11 years, Metropolitan Magistrate Imdadul Haque submitted the judicial inquiry report to the court on August 3, 2014. That report also described Salman Shah’s death as an unnatural death. After the death of Komruddin Ahmed Chowdhury, his wife Neela Chowdhury was included as the complainant in the murder case.
On February 10, 2015, she filed a no confidence petition against the judicial inquiry report at the Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Court. Most recently, the Police Bureau of Investigation (PBI) investigated the case. On October 31, 2021, the court accepted the report and disposed of the case.
On June 12, 2022, a revision case was filed at the Dhaka Metropolitan Sessions Judge’s Court challenging the order.
