James Bond is one of the most sought-after characters in the history of Hollywood and British cinema. Since Daniel Craig’s departure, speculation has been rife for the past few years over who will become the next secret agent.
However, putting an end to much of the speculation, 36-year-old British actor Callum Turner has emerged as the leading contender in the race. Adding fuel to the speculation is former James Bond star Pierce Brosnan himself.
In a recent interview with Vanity Fair, former Bond actor Pierce Brosnan also voiced his support for Callum Turner. Turner played the role of Brosnan’s son in the 2017 film The Only Living Boy in New York.
Brosnan told Vanity Fair, “I have worked with Callum. He is a very strong actor.”
He added, “All the actors on the list deserve praise. They all have wonderful voices, physiques and a strong screen presence. These young men have what it takes to go a long way in the acting world.”
Following Brosnan’s comments, Turner’s odds of becoming the next Bond at international betting company William Hill surged from 3/1 to 8/13. This means Turner has overtaken the other two contenders, Jack Lowden and Josh O’Connor, to become the frontrunner for the role of 007.
Recently, Callum submitted his resignation from the production house he co-founded with his wife, pop superstar Dua Lipa. According to entertainment analysts, the decision was made to devote his full attention to a major project like Bond.
Adding to the speculation, the couple posted a photo on Instagram during Halloween showing them with a martini, James Bond’s signature cocktail. The post was seen as a subtle hint from the couple.
If Turner, known for Fantastic Beasts and The Boys in the Boat, is ultimately selected, audiences could see the new Bond on screen in 2028 under the direction of Denis Villeneuve, the acclaimed filmmaker behind Dune. The screenplay is being written by Steven Knight, known for Peaky Blinders.
Amazon MGM Studios is awaiting the official announcement of the final selection, which could be made by the end of this year.
