Tawhid Afridi granted bail

A Dhaka court has granted bail to content creator Tawhid Afridi in a fraud case filed with Wari Police Station in the capital.

On Tuesday, Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Ariful Islam granted bail to Tawhid Afridi after hearing a petition filed on his behalf.

His lawyer, Iqbal Mahmud Sovon said, “There are a total of three cases against Tawhid Afridi. He had already secured bail from the High Court in two of those cases. As he was granted bail today in the Wari Police Station case as well, he is now on bail in all the cases. Therefore, there is no legal barrier to his release. Earlier, on June 15, he was shown arrested in this case.”

According to the case statement, on Jan. 13, 2025, an online fraud ring contacted the complainant through WhatsApp and Telegram with the promise of a job. They then encouraged the victim to invest money in several stages. At first, they returned a small amount of money to gain the victim’s trust and later collected larger sums in phases.

Although they promised to return the money with profits, they allegedly misappropriated a total of Tk 235,000 from the victim. In connection with the incident, Syeda Ashfah Toaha Dyuti filed a case with Wari Police Station against unidentified suspects.

On the night of Aug. 24 last year, CID police arrested Tawhid Afridi in Barishal. He was later shown arrested in multiple cases related to the Anti-Discrimination Student Movement and taken on remand.
