Veteran theatre personality Ataur Rahman is critically ill and currently on life support. The matter was confirmed to the media on Monday (May 11) by his daughter, Sharmistha Rahman.
Speaking in the evening, Sharmistha Rahman said, “My father is still on life support. He had been suffering from various age-related ailments for a quite some time. His physical condition remains unchanged, and there has been no significant improvement. We ask everyone to pray for him.”
According to family sources, Ataur Rahman’s condition deteriorated after he fell at home on Friday. He was initially taken to a hospital in Gulshan. As there was no immediate ICU facility available there, he was later admitted to a hospital in Dhanmondi.
Soon after admission, he was placed on life support. When his condition showed slight improvement, the life support was withdrawn. However, after his health worsened again, he was put back on life support on Sunday.
Ataur Rahman is known for his multifaceted contributions to Bangladeshi culture. He is an actor, stage director, and writer, and is widely regarded as one of the pioneers of the post–Liberation War theatre movement in Bangladesh. Born on June 18, 1941, in Noakhali, he has played a significant role in shaping modern Bangladeshi theatre.
