‘Jailer 2’ ranks fourth among highest-grossing Tamil films in just seven days

Rajinikanth’s ‘Jailer 2’ crosses Rs 576 crore in just seven days
The combination of South Indian superstar Rajinikanth and director Nelson Dilipkumar has once again proved its box office dominance. The sequel to the 2023 blockbuster Jailer, Jailer 2, has created a storm at the box office just one week after its release.
With worldwide earnings of more than Rs 5.76 billion in just seven days, the film has secured its place as the fourth highest-grossing Tamil film of all time and the second highest-grossing Indian film of 2026.
In its opening week, Jailer 2 shattered the lifetime box office records of Mani Ratnam’s historical film Ponniyin Selvan: Part 1, which earned Rs 4.8836 billion, and Rajinikanth’s previous film Coolie, which grossed Rs 5.18 billion.
Not only that, the action thriller has surpassed the 20 day earnings of Ajay Devgn’s blockbuster Drishyam: The Conclusion in just seven days.
Thalaiva Rajinikanth has fully capitalized on the festive season and the absence of any major competitors at the box office.
Produced by Kalanithi Maran under the banner of Sun Pictures, the sequel features a much broader storyline.
The screenplay follows former jailer Tiger Muthuvel Pandian as he tries to protect his family from a dangerous idol smuggling syndicate while concealing the unknown truth behind his son's death.
Alongside Rajinikanth, the film features new attractions in the form of stars such as SJ Suryah, Mithun Chakraborty and Vidya Balan.
Rajinikanth’s 2018 mega project 2.0 currently tops the list of the highest-grossing Tamil films of all time with Rs 6.91 billion. Vijay’s Leo ranks second with Rs 6.059 billion.
With screenings continuing to sell out, trade analysts expect Jailer 2 to surpass its predecessor soon and set another new record.
