A Bangladeshi youth named Md. Khademul Islam (25) was killed in a shooting incident at the Amjhol Border in Hatibandha, according to local reports.
The incident occurred around 5:00 am on Thursday. However, the Border Security Force (BSF) of India has denied any involvement in the shooting.
The victim was the son of Amzad Hossain from Amjhol village in Goatamari Union. His death was confirmed by Lieutenant Colonel Mehdi Imam, commander of Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) 15 Battalion.
Local residents said Khademul went fishing with a net in the Khorpora River near the border early in the morning. At that time, members of India’s BSF 78 Battalion (Paglimari camp) allegedly opened fire on him. Hearing the gunshots, family members and locals rushed to the spot and found him lying in a pool of blood. He was taken home, where he was later declared dead.
Union Parishad member Saidar Rahman also confirmed the death.
However, BGB commander Mehdi Imam said that although the BSF initially agreed to investigate the incident, they later denied any involvement. Indian authorities reportedly claim that no firing took place and that their weapons inspection showed no evidence of recent discharge.
The Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) said communication with BSF is ongoing regarding the incident.
