The appeal hearing regarding the candidacy of BNP leader Aslam Chowdhury, the unofficial winner of the Chattogram-4 constituency in the 13th National Parliament Election, has concluded.
The court has scheduled 30 June to deliver the final verdict.
An Appellate Bench of four judges, led by the Chief Justice, issued the order on Monday. Senior lawyers Miftah Uddin Chowdhury and Barrister AM Mahbub Uddin Khokon represented Aslam in court.
Lawyer Mohammad Shishir Monir appeared on behalf of the Jamaat-e-Islami candidate.
The legal dispute follows allegations that Aslam is a loan defaulter. Despite these claims, the Election Commission (EC) declared his nomination papers valid on 18 January.
When the High Court dismissed a writ petition filed by a bank challenging that decision, the bank authorities approached the Appellate Division. The Jamaat candidate, Md Anwar Siddiqui filed a leave to appeal against the High Court’s order, which the Appellate Division granted on 3 February.
Although the court permitted Aslam to contest the election, it ordered that the results must remain suspended and unpublished until the final settlement of the appeal.
Consequently, although Aslam emerged victorious in the election, the official results have not been released due to the standing court order.
