Authorities have halted the removal of an unfinished statue of Bir Sreshtho Hamidur Rahman in Jhenaidah and announced plans to build a new statue at a prominent location in the town.
Jhenaidah Deputy Commissioner MA Majid and the district BNP president confirmed the decision on Saturday afternoon.
The deputy commissioner said the unfinished statue near the town's main bus terminal had obstructed traffic and contributed to road accidents. He said those issues prompted agitated residents to begin removing the structure.
The work was suspended after authorities held talks with those removing the structure, he said. They plan to build a new statue of Bir Sreshtho Hamidur Rahman at a prominent location in the town soon.
Local residents said the district administration had decided about two years ago to remove the statue because it was causing traffic congestion and following demands from transport workers. The issue resurfaced in recent days as efforts to remove the structure triggered controversy.
Agamir Somoy published reports on the issue on Friday and Saturday. Following protests by members of Bir Sreshtho Hamidur Rahman's family, the removal work was suspended.
