A man alleged killed his wife, three children and brother in law in Gazipur and went into hiding, police said.
Five members of the same family were killed in Kapasia upazila of Gazipur, and the suspected head of the family, Forkan Mia, is currently absconding. Kapasia Police Station Officer-in-Charge Md. Shahinur Alam said that Forkan rang relatives on mobile set early Saturday morning and informed them about the slaughtering.
According to Shahinur Alam, Forkan killed his wife, three children, and his brother-in-law at some point on Friday night. Early Saturday morning, he called his own relatives as well as relatives--- his in-laws’--- and confessed to the killings. However, his whereabouts are still unknown.
The OC’s initial assumption is that the murders were carried out due to family disputes.
The incident took place in Rautkona village under the Sadar Union of the upazila. On Saturday morning, the bodies of five people were found in the house of a Bangladeshi expatriate. The slain are Forkan’s wife Sharmin (30), their eldest daughter Mim (15), middle daughter Maria (8), youngest son Farid (2), and Sharmin’s younger brother Rasul Mia (22).
After being informed by local residents, police from Kapasia Police Station visited the crime scene in the morning and recovered the bodies. Members of Kapasia Police and Gazipur District Police’s Additional Superintendent of Police (Crime), Ashfaq Uzzaman, are conducting investigations at the scene.
Local sources said that Forkan Mia--hailing from Gopalganj District-- had been living with his family as a tenant on the ground floor of a house owned by expatriate Monir Hossain.
According to eyewitness accounts, the bodies of the three children, with their throats slit, were lying side by side on the floor of a room. The body of Sharmin’s brother Rasul was found on a bed, while Sharmin’s bloodstained body, with her hands and mouth tied, was found near a window.
Additional Superintendent of Police Ashfaq Uzzaman said the process of sending the bodies to the morgue of Gazipur Shaheed Tajuddin Ahmad Medical College Hospital for autopsy is underway. Multiple police teams are working to arrest the accused.
Meanwhile, a piece of paper was found beside Sharmin’s body, which appears to be a copy of a complaint filed with Gopalganj Sadar Police Station.
The document contains allegations by Forkan accusing Sharmin of having an extramarital relationship. It also mentions that Sharmin and her father allegedly took 1 million taka from Forkan at various times on the pretext of buying land and covering other expenses. It further alleges that Forkan was recently assaulted by Sharmin and her family members.
However, the authenticity of this complaint has not yet been confirmed.
