Miscreants shot five people while traveling to a wedding’s gaye holud ceremony in Begumganj, Noakhali around 11:15 pm on Monday.
Begumganj Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Md Shamsuzzaman confirmed the matter. Among the victims, one is in critical condition and has been sent to Dhaka for advanced medical treatment.
The victims have been identified as Nazrul Islam Shanto, Maruf Ahmed, Jasim Uddin, Sakib Hossain, and Bablu. Locals rescued the injured and admitted them to the 250-bed Noakhali General Hospital.
Shanto said, “We were going to record video at a gaye holud ceremony using three motorcycles and two auto-rickshaws, accompanied by several women. At that time, miscreants shot at our motorcycles from behind.”
He added that they sustained gunshot wounds and claimed he recognized locals Harun and Picchi Riyad among the attackers.
In his allegation, Shanto noted, “Riyad commented that I am involved with Jamaat-Shibir and threatened to shoot me by pressing a pistol to my leg.”
Locals said the shooting was the result of a pre-existing dispute between locals Harun and Rayhan. Multiple sources added that Harun and his associates allegedly opened fire on the group, mistaking them for their rival Rayhan’s people. Multiple attempts to reach the accused, Harun and Riyad, were unsuccessful.
OC Shamsuzzaman said police have visited the scene and will take legal action.
