A case has been filed against four individuals, including Shamim Hossain, the president of Dhaka Club, on charges of embezzlement through fraud and threats to kill an individual.
The case application was submitted today, Tuesday, before the court of Metropolitan Magistrate Arifur Rahman in Dhaka by Ashik Molla, a former employee of the club.
After recording the complainant's statement, the court took cognizance of the allegation. At the same time, summons have been issued for the accused to appear before the court on September 29. The complainant's lawyer, Habibur Rahman, confirmed the matter.
The other accused in the case are Tuhin Reza, Director of Finance of Dhaka Club, Chief Operating Officer and Secretary Lieutenant Colonel Sabbir Ahmed (retired), and Chief Financial Officer Iqbal Hossain.
According to the case details, Ashik Molla joined Dhaka Club as an attendant on November 23, 2017. He received permanent employment on August 19, 2018. After serving for a long time, he was temporarily suspended on January 26 of the current year for violating service rules. After being suspended for six months, he was dismissed from service on July 27.
As per the case complaint, after his dismissal, Ashik was owed Tk 490,000 in service benefits, provident fund, gratuity, notice pay, and arrears.
Failing to receive his dues, he filed a mediation application under Section 124A(5) of the Bangladesh Labour Act at the office of the Deputy Inspector General of the Department of Inspection for Factories and Establishments. However, it is mentioned in the case that the accused did not appear for the mediation despite receiving notice. Later, the labour inspector issued the complainant a written clearance.
After receiving the clearance, Ashik went to Dhaka Club on August 15, where the accused gave him a cheque for Tk 116,981. However, they refused to pay the remaining Tk 373,019, according to the case complaint.
The complaint further states that the accused threatened to kill Ashik if he made too much fuss over his dues. However, a statement from the accused party regarding the allegations was not immediately available.
