An inquiry committee recommended the temporary suspension of four students over the attack on journalists at Shahid Ziaur Rahman Hall, University of Rajshahi (RU).
The students are RU Jatiotabadi Chatradal (JCD) Vice President Ahsan Habib, RU JCD activist Bishal Chakraborty, RU JCD Joint General Secretary Hasibul Hasan, and Zia Hall General Secretary Ariful Islam.
Moreover, the committee recommended taking disciplinary action against four other students, while advising formal warnings for three students.
The committee submitted its investigation report to the university registrar’s office on Thursday, following the 4 October night attack. The university administration formed the committee on 5 October, directing members to submit their findings within three working days.
It also recommended taking measures against RUCSU Co-Cultural Secretary Rakibul Islam, RU JCD Vice President Takbir Ahmed Imon, Joint General Secretary Syed Sajharul Islam, and JCD activist Tanim Rahman.
Meanwhile, the inquiry committee advised issuing warnings to JCD Vice President Bulbul Rahman, Vice President Shariful Islam, and Assistant Office Secretary Shahriar Alam.
Demanding swift implementation, Rajshahi University Journalists’ Association President Mir Kadir said, “We want to see the recommended punishment implemented through the Syndicate within the next two days. Their boycott program from covering news of the university administration will continue until an inquiry committee is formed.”
University Vice-Chancellor Professor Faridul Islam added that if anyone attempts to create such disorder or a violent atmosphere on campus in the future, this report will serve as a message for them.
