Rear Admiral Arif Ahmed Mostafa, Chairman of the Mongla Port Authority, said the Prime Minister will lay the foundation stone for the construction of two new container jetties at the port and related development work. This will mark the start of the project's construction work.
He said the project will be implemented under an agreement signed between Bangladesh and China on October 10. The agreement was signed during the Prime Minister's recent visit to China. The project cost has been estimated at Tk 4,068 crore. Of this, the Bangladesh government will finance Tk 475 crore and China Tk 3,593 crore.
Under the project, a 368-meter-long container terminal and yard will be constructed. It will also have facilities for handling dangerous cargo. Forty-nine pieces of equipment will be added to the new container yard. More than 30 containers will be able to be loaded and unloaded per hour. As a result, Mongla Port's annual container handling capacity will increase to four lakh TEUs.
