A man and his family allegedly beat his housewife to death over dowry in Ulipur, Kurigram on Thursday.
Ulipur Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Shawkat Ali Sarkar confirmed the matter. The victim has been identified as Nasrin Jahan, 20.
According to relatives of the deceased, Nasrin married Alamgir Hossain, 25, around three years ago. Allegations indicate that Alamgir frequently tortured his wife demanding dowry ever since their marriage.
Relatives alleged that a quarrel broke out between Nasrin and her husband over various family issues on Wednesday night. At one stage, he beat her, leading to her death. Upon realizing she died, Alamgir and his family members fled the scene.
Locals learned about the matter and notified the police. Police then arrived and recovered the dead body. Nasrin had a two-and-a-half-year-old child named Luzai Akter.
Nasrin’s father Nur Islam alleged, “At the time of marriage, I gave Tk 25,000 as dowry. I took time to pay the remaining money. The money was supposed to be paid after selling paddy this season. In the meantime, Alamgir along with his family members beat my daughter to death demanding the remaining Tk 45,000 in dowry and fled. They frequently tortured my daughter for dowry.”
OC Shawkat said the injury marks were present on the housewife’s body. Authorities will send the body to the morgue for an autopsy on Friday, and officials will know the exact cause of death after receiving the autopsy report. Nur filed a case at the police station.
