Rumeen accuses OC of bribery, extortion in Brahmanbaria

Brahmanbaria-2 MP Rumeen got into a verbal altercation with Sarail Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Manjur Kader Bhuiyan in Brahmanbaria on Thursday night.
She went to the police station to inquire about allegations of irregularities and corruption against the OC. Addressing the OC, Rumeen said, “You were a big Awami League supporter. I know your history, sir. Anyway, I have no headache over that.”
Witnesses said during the Durga Puja, when she went to visit the puja mandaps, instructions had been issued to arrange for her security. However, allegations suggest that OC failed to provide her with security.
To inquire about the issue and discuss the allegations of irregularities and corruption raised against the OC, Rumeen went to the police station.
During the visit, an individual accompanying Rumeen alleged that the OC had taken a bribe of Tk 30,000 from him. The OC denied the bribery allegation, commenting that Rumeen brought him to the police station. This triggered an altercation between the two.
When asked regarding Rumeen’s allegations, OC said the MP created unrest by coming to the police station accompanied by hundreds of people. He claimed she brought individuals along to make baseless accusations.
He added, “She said I collect money from brick kilns. All the brick kilns in the haor are under water. And we took security measures across the entire police station area during the puja. But keeping a police team personally with her was difficult at that time.”
Rumeen noted that the OC told her she is an MP and that the public would provide her security. In this context, she said, “That is why, as people can see, they are providing my security. I do need security.”
She claimed that allegations exist against the OC involving corruption, extorting money from soil cutting activities, and collecting money from brick kilns. She added, “The area is riot-prone. After a riot occurs and when everything becomes calm, that is when they go. These are the exact matters I came to inquire about today. The behavior he displayed toward me is not acceptable to do with an MP.”
When contacted several times by phone for comment, Brahmanbaria Superintendent of Police (SP) Jalal Uddin Fahim did not answer.
