A fishing trawler sank in the Bay of Bengal after being caught in a storm, leaving six fishermen missing and five others rescued, authorities said.
The incident occurred around 10 pm Sunday in deep waters of the Bay of Bengal. The rescued fishermen were able to contact their families on Monday after reaching an area with mobile network coverage. The trawler owner’s family later informed Golachipa Police Station about the incident.
The missing fishermen were identified as Md. Harun Hawlader, son of the late Gedu Hawlader of South Panpatti village; Md. Emadul of Panpatti village; Md. Forkan, Md. Sayem, and Md. Al Amin of Ichadi village in Gazalia Union; and Md. Akash of Pakkhia village in Golachipa Sadar Union.
Golachipa Police Station Officer-in-Charge Md. Imtiaz Ahmed confirmed the incident. He said the rescued fishermen remain at sea and may take several more hours to return to shore.
According to local sources, a fishing trawler owned by Md. Emadul Sikder of Panpatti Union left for the deep Bay of Bengal on Thursday with 11 fishermen on board to catch hilsa.
The trawler encountered severe weather and sank Sunday night. Fishermen aboard another nearby trawler managed to rescue five people, while the remaining six went missing.
“Eleven fishermen, including trawler owner Emadul, had gone to sea to fish. The trawler sank after being caught in a storm,” OC Imtiaz Ahmed said. “Five fishermen who were on top of the trawler were rescued, but the six who were inside it have not yet been found.”
