Former State Minister Harun Al Rashid Passes Away

Harun Al Rashid, a five-time former Member of Parliament for Brahmanbaria-3 (Sadar and Bijoynagar) and a former state minister, has died at the age of 87. He was a leader of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP). (Inna Lillahi wa inna ilayhi raji’un)

He breathed his last on Thursday while undergoing treatment at Bangladesh Specialized Hospital in Dhaka. He left behind numerous admirers, political colleagues, relatives, and well-wishers, according to party sources.

Brahmanbaria District BNP General Secretary and District Council Administrator Sirajul Islam confirmed the news. He said Harun Al Rashid had been suffering from multiple health complications for a long time.

Born in Narsingsar village under Natai (South) Union of Brahmanbaria Sadar Upazila, Harun Al Rashid was a resident of Moulvibazar area in the district town. Throughout his long political career, he played an important role in both local and national politics.

In his political life, Harun Al Rashid served as the president of Brahmanbaria District BNP and as a vice chairman of the party’s central committee. He was elected to Parliament five times and served as state minister for the Ministry of Shipping and the Ministry of Disaster Management and Relief. He also held the position of Chief Whip of Parliament during the tenure of late President Ziaur Rahman, making a significant contribution to national politics.

His death has cast a shadow of mourning over Brahmanbaria and the national political landscape. Leaders and activists of the BNP at both central and local levels expressed deep condolences and prayed for the eternal peace of the deceased.

The family has said that details of his funeral and burial arrangements will be announced later.
