At least 8 Killed in Truck-Pickup Collision in Sylhet

At least eight people were killed in a collision between a truck and a pickup in South Surma, Sylhet. The accident occurred on Sunday morning near the Telibazar bridge on the highway in South Surma.
Four of the deceased have been identified, so far. They are Md. Suruj Ali (60) from Bhatipara village in Sunamganj’s Dirai upazila; Mosa. Munni (35), daughter of Abdul Bashir from Sheshasti village in the same upazila; Md. Badrul (30), son of Sujat Ali from Lalargaon in Sylhet’s Jalalabad; and Md. Faridul (35), son of the late Nur Salam from Nurnagar in Dirai. Police said the identities of the other four victims are yet to be confirmed.
The information was confirmed by Md. Riazul Kabir, Deputy Commissioner (South) of Sylhet Metropolitan Police.
Citing witnesses, he said that around 6:00 AM Sunday, several construction workers set off from Sylhet toward Sunamganj in a DI pickup. When they reached the Tetli Bazar area of South Surma, the pickup collided with a jackfruit-laden truck approaching from Chittagong. Four workers died on the spot. Four others were declared dead after being rushed to Sylhet MAG Osmani Medical College Hospital in critical condition.
The Deputy Commissioner added that several other workers are currently undergoing treatment at the hospital, with doctors describing their condition as critical. The drivers of both the pickup and the truck have been fugitives since the incident. Operations are underway to identify and arrest them, and police have launched an investigation to determine the exact cause of the accident.
